Myakka river state park is Florida’s best natural wild park. The park is a birding paradise. Many viewing areas as well as easy walking paths. We saw Spoonbills, all different kinds of Herons, White Pelicans, Wild pigs, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Bald Eagles, Wood Storks, oh and mature Alligators! The old Spanish moss covered Live Oak and Sand Jack Oak are plentiful and create a beautiful canopy along the paved entrance road.
I took this shot on the way from Charleston to Edisto Island. The road down to Edisto Islands’ Botany Bay Heritage Preserve is Awesome! If you follow precise instructions you will end up at the “Bone Yard”, a stretch of beach that is littered with dead trees that the ocean has reclaimed. The 3 miles or so of beach are famous for sunrises through the trees.

White Ibis at morning, wading in shallows, with friends. It must be hard to kiss but the necking should be a sight to see!
White Ibis seem to group in my front yard ever so often. There will be 10 to 20 poking their long beaks in the ground with frequent regularity. I am sure they are burrowing for grubs or insects of some distinction. We’ve become accustomed to this ritual which belies the fact that they are so graceful when flying as a “congregation”, as they are called. Flying in formation provides less wind resistance so they can go faster and father with less effort. Quite unique and beautiful.
I shot this congregation while picking up my mail at the club house. They circled a few times and then flew away. I think they were trying to get their formation right before heading out. White Ibis flying in formation is called a congregation. I haven’t heard any singing or praying from the congregation but I have heard a little squawking and honking as they flew over, LOL.
A tri-colored Heron at a South Florida sanctuary with a serious case of the itch.
Florida is so ripe with wildlife… you can’t go anywhere without seeing something beautiful if you just have the patience and a little foreknowledge. There is a spill way/refuge/preserve immediately behind one of our local shopping malls that is a perfect sanctuary for wildlife. I often bring my camera while shopping out there and as I drove around to the sanctuary I was luckily greeted by a few Herons and Egrets. My camera and lens setup was…

Michigan route M-119 is called the Tunnel of Trees and it parallels Lake Michigan.
It is ranked among the most scenic roads in the nation. The road way leads right through the heart of fall in Michigan. The hardwood’s leaves change their colors and light up the landscape with reds, yellows and golds. The route begins in Petoskey along lake Michigan for 20 miles or so down through Cross Village and Good Hart. Don’t forget to stop at one of these scenic villages for a hearty snack and a break from driving this curvy roadway.
The colors of the leaves, hot apple cider, delicious doughnuts and the country ride to grandma’s house. You can’t see the house yet but you know this magical path is going to get you there and the drive is worth it. I can still remember the mood altering sights, sounds and smells on the way to grandma’s house. Through the back country, windows down, crisp fall air, and the dirt road lined with old hardwoods.
Taking another look at this image on the wall in your office just might be the ticket to clear the mind. Yep, it just might do the trick as you reflect back on the good ole times on the way to grandma’s house.
